Total Solar Eclipse to Blanket Upstate New York in April

Here's when to NOT look directly at it.

The timing couldn't be better, let's just hope the skies are clear. A total solar eclipse will make its way from Texas to New York on Monday, April 8, 2024. Although the path of the eclipse will be slightly north of Albany, here in the Capital Region we should get about 97% totality. Areas north and west Buffalo, Syracuse, Watertown and Plattsburgh will see 100% coverage.

Albany and the surrounding area will begin to see the sun covered by the moon starting around 2pm. The sun will remain partially covered until about 4:30pm.

Remember, a solar eclipse is one you DON'T want to look directly at. Even though the sun's image may be blocked by the moon, its powerful rays are not and could cause eye damage without certified eclipse glasses or another form of proper eye protection.
